{"id":1214,"date":"2016-06-16T10:21:23","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T17:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.k6bj.org\/?p=1214"},"modified":"2016-06-16T10:21:23","modified_gmt":"2016-06-16T17:21:23","slug":"chatter-june-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/archives\/1214","title":{"rendered":"Chatter June 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-328\" src=\"https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter.jpg\" alt=\"Chatter by Art Lee WF6P\" width=\"342\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter.jpg 342w, https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter-100x80.jpg 100w, https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter-150x120.jpg 150w, https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/chatter-200x160.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>WAYNE THALLS\u00a0 KB6KN (SK)<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;margin-top: -25px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span>It is always sad when we lose a long-time friend.\u00a0 Wayne was one of those who was always there to help when needed.\u00a0 A ham radio operator since his boyhood, he loved the hobby and continued with it throughout his life.\u00a0 Back in 1980 when I was first licensed, I looked to Wayne for any electronics information I was curious about.\u00a0 He was keenly interested in the history of radio and during WWII, was a top turret gunner and radio operator in B-25 aircraft.\u00a0 He had a career in law enforcement in Indiana and was responsible for the operation and maintenance of early police radios.\u00a0 During his engineering career he worked for many of the large companies in the industry.\u00a0 Wayne and I were contributors to Short Skip in the 1980s and 1990s when Northe Osbrink, N6KO, was the editor and publisher.\u00a0 Wayne and I would drive out to Northe\u2019s residence in Aptos to deliver our copy to him directly.\u00a0 Often, Wayne and I arrived \u00a0at the same time.\u00a0 I believe that Northe lived on Arthur Road at the time.\u00a0 When he moved out of state, Wayne took over as editor of Short Skip.\u00a0 He was very active in public events such as The Human Race and we participated as relays annually.\u00a0 In the 1989 Quake, Wayne took the helm for ARES, coordinating all ham activities in the county both during and after the quake. \u00a0When my granddaughter Cheri, KE6BOP, got her Novice license, Wayne came to my home to give her the code test.\u00a0 I was in another room when he sent code and I thought at the time that it was more like 10 wpm than five.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think Wayne could send any slower.\u00a0 She passed and went on to get her General.
