{"id":4568,"date":"2021-08-17T09:20:04","date_gmt":"2021-08-17T16:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.k6bj.org\/?p=4568"},"modified":"2021-10-21T10:56:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T17:56:13","slug":"august-meeting-speaker-ed-fong-wb6iqn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/archives\/4568","title":{"rendered":"August Meeting, Speaker Ed Fong (WB6IQN)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\">August Meeting with Speaker Ed Fong WB6IQN<\/h4>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">This month&#8217;s Club meeting \u00a0featured Ed Fong (WB6IQN) discussing his well-known antennas and their functions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4630\" src=\"https:\/\/k6bj.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/6B4B2165-0ED8-4EBF-AD50-96143F9AE7C2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"462\" \/><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The August meeting was with Ed Fong (WB6IQN).\u00a0\u00a0As many of you know, he is the inventor of the DBJ-1 and DBJ-2 antenna that was featured in the February 2003 and March 2007 QST.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0His most recent antenna was the TBJ-1 \u2013 a triband base antenna that was published in March 2017 QST.\u00a0\u00a0The DBJ-1 is a highly effective dual band VHF\/UHF base station antenna and the DBJ-2 is the portable roll up version.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The DBJ-2 won the QST Plaque of the Month Award. Both of these antennas are featured in the ARRL VHF antenna Handbook and also in the ARRL Antenna Classic Handbook.\u00a0\u00a0There are over 18,000 of these antennas in use today.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0About half are used by hams and the other half by government and commercial agencies. He will also give a brief discussion of his triband antenna (TBJ-1) that was featured in March 2017 QST.<wbr \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<wbr \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<wbr \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<wbr \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<wbr \/><\/p>\n<p>Ed gave a history on how these antennas were developed and the theory on how and why they work so well.\u00a0\u00a0There is no \u201cblack magic\u201d to antennas.\u00a0\u00a0He will explain in a non-mathematical manner why these antennas work so well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biography &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ed Fong was first licensed in 1968 as WN6IQN.\u00a0\u00a0He later upgraded to Extra Class with his present call of WB6IQN.\u00a0\u00a0He obtained the BSEE and MSEE degrees from the Univ. of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. from the Univ. of San Francisco.\u00a0\u00a0A Senior Member of the IEEE, he has 12 patents and over 40\u00a0\u00a0published papers and books in the area of communications and integrated circuit design.\u00a0\u00a0Presently, he is employed by the University of California,\u00a0\u00a0Santa Cruz (previously with Berkeley from 1997-2010) as an instructor teaching graduate classes in RF design and high speed interface.\u00a0\u00a0In his 35 year career, he has done work for Stanford University, National Semiconductor, Advanced Micro Devices, numerous startup companies in the Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"m_8926964270873628285ydp4ba112e6yiv3338227058\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August Meeting with Speaker Ed Fong WB6IQN This month&#8217;s Club meeting \u00a0featured Ed Fong (WB6IQN) discussing his well-known antennas and their functions.
