To Past SOC Volunteers, SBCARA Members, and Ham Radio Leaders (please pass this along to your groups),<\/p>\n
The 26th Sea Otter Classic will be held on April 14-17, 2016.\u00a0 Help from amateur radio operators has been a vital resource for communication in the Fort Ord National Monument back country and the Gran Fondo (“Great Endurance”) Carmel Valley Route.<\/p>\n
The Sea Otter Classic attracts over 10,000 athletes and over 65,000 spectators and is now universally regarded as the world?s premiere cycling festival.\u00a0 The areas where we assist have little or no cellular or repeater coverage.\u00a0 It is an excellent opportunity for demonstration and practice of emergency communications and help build readiness for a real disaster.\u00a0 This year, the back country course will be different than the last few years, potentially presenting new challenges.<\/p>\n
This year help will be needed for the following times (the schedule is still in being finalized – so this may change in the next few weeks):<\/p>\n
Thursday 4\/14 – Back Country Support – All Day – only one or two volunteers needed
\nSaturday 4\/16 – Back Country Support – Early Morning to Mid Afternoon
\nSaturday 4\/16 – Gran Fondo Carmel Valley Road Support – All Day
\nSunday 4\/17 – Back Country Support – Early Morning to Mid Afternoon
\nCamping is available directly from the event or we have the option of camping for no charge in the Laguna Seca paddock.
\nWe’re continuing our new process that better integrates us with the other teams providing support and lets everyone focus on their specialties.\u00a0 Ham radio operators will be primarily working radios including ham radios and\/or commercial\/public safety radios\u00a0 (i.e. You may be asked to coordinate on a public safety frequency to guide in an ambulance while the medic provides care).\u00a0 This will give us the advantage of not having to double up just to make sure we don’t have a ham out there alone, and we will still pair experienced hams with new hams as needed.\u00a0 First aid and course marshal support will be provided by BETA (Bicycle Equestrian Trails Assistance) and National Ski Patrol as in the past.<\/p>\n
Please let me know as soon as possible if you’re interested in volunteering.\u00a0 We’ll need a volunteer wavier signed.\u00a0 More details will be available closer to the event.<\/p>\n
Typically volunteers receive a volunteer T-Shirt, a pass to the Sea Otter Classic Festival (a $40 value), and a lunch if your shift spans lunch time.<\/p>\n
Please note that the times and details are subject to change, but we will keep you updated if you volunteer.\u00a0 Please keep in mind that end times are estimates.\u00a0 In most cases the event will end earlier, but if we have a significant incident, demobilization may go much later.<\/p>\n
